This little Southern Fiction gem follows four characters, Caleb, Titus, Abigail, and Jonathan, whose separate stories intertwine to create a remarkably moving picture of the power of love and family.

Caleb Salt is fifteen. The youngest of four boys whose father is dead and whose mother is unwell, Caleb finds himself in the care of his uncle. As he finds his way in his own coming of age story, he meets a girl. (There's always a girl.)

Titus Schillings is a man who has stepped up to the plate for his family time and time again as his own dreams of a family of his own seem less likely with each year that goes by. Unwilling to abandon his young nephews or his widowed sister, Titus risks losing the relationship that matters most to him. Finding himself the target of a small town hatred, Titus has to choose between his family and his happiness.

Abigail Schillings doesn't always find her life as a Pastor's wife in a small town to be a good fit. Her wrong side of the tracks upbringing usurps her Christian mercy when her family is threatened. Abigail isn't afraid of hard decisions...especially when her children are involved.

Jonathan Schillings is a man pulled in every direction; everyone wants a piece of his time. Balancing his own family, his extended family, and his church family has become exhausting to the young pastor, but, when one family turns on another, he has to choose between his church and his brother.

Originally published as a weekly serial on the author's website, the first volume of weekly installments has been compiled into "Little River Volume One."

Little River Volume One eBook Rachel Holbrook

I was surprised at the small size of the book, (less than 80 pages) but by the time I finished reading it I was completely won over ... Rachel Holbrook managed to develop all her characters and the entire plot so that the number of pages was exactly right!
I am a writer myself, an indie publisher, and a voracious reader ... I say all this to possibly add a bit of weight to my enthusiasm for this author. I am truly looking forward to the rest of this wonderful series. Marilyn Smith Neilans, author, "Saying GoodBye to The Iris Lady."

Little River Volume One eBook Rachel Holbrook Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and the description of the characters and places made it very easy to picture yourself in that town. I felt like I knew these people and these places. There are a lot of characters and at times that can be a little confusing but not enough to really bog you down. It was an easy read and very enjoyable.

I would highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
Very well done. As an East Tennessee native, I appreciated the authenticity of Ms. Holbrook's writing. The characters and situations are realistically portrayed, and the door is certainly open for further exploration of the struggles and triumphs of the residents of Little River. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
I found the book to be very well written. The last chapter explained the Christian concept of accepting gay people through the words of Jesus and his love. Ms. Holbrook's writing had me sitting in the congregation listening to the pastor and tears rolled down my cheeks. It was so moving. Good job, Rachel!
I began reading Little River when it was published as a serial and couldn't wait to read the next installment every Tuesday. I re-read the book in one sitting to savor the characters once again.
The dialogue is authentic and you can almost hear the southern drawl. Writing from several characters' viewpoints reveals differing reactions and perceptions to each situation. There are no easy solutions or pat answers to very complex human predicaments. Characters are well developed and feel like real people- all have strengths and flaws and conflicting emotions as they face difficult circumstances. Ms. Holbrook has a unique ability to capture feelings and thought processes of each her characters and allows us to feel their deepest thoughts. That's a rare gift .
I just finished Rachel Holbrook’s gem of a book, Little River. It is well wrought narrative that creates complex characters with a few brush strokes. One of my favorites is Abigail, the preacher’s wife. who manages several cultures beautifully and provides comic relief. The opening draws the reader in immediately with the contrasting realities of life in Little River, and the plot of the book is a page turner after that. Plus, to my complete joy as a college English teacher, I did not find a single editing error in the book.
I loved this little book and look forward to the sequels. Not only is Ms Holbrook a gifted writer, but she has uncommonly keen insights into human behavior. Taking an intimate look at one extended family in rural East Tennessee, the author examines its members' disparate lifestyles, sexual identities, and attitudes regarding religion and social mores. Through these characters' struggles in coming to terms with their own values, the author offers up beautifully crafted and inspired morality lessons in a non-judgmental tone. As a native of the area, the author's depiction of the landscape and the rural culture ring true and meaningful. The reader can continue following the story at the author's website [...]
I found it so easy to get involved in the characters because they seem so real. This is the kind of book that you can spend a day wrapped in a blanket reading from cover to cover (like I did!).
